Single Block Shiraz

McLaren Vale is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world.


Given that ‘site’ – geology and climate – plays such a well-known and vital role in wine style, a group of local winemakers and viticulturists launched the McLaren Vale Scarce Earth project to explore and celebrate this diversity with one of the region’s key varieties – Shiraz.
A highly qualified and experienced panel consisting of three local winemakers and three independent experts assess each entry wine at the Annual Selection Tasting to ensure the wines meet the criteria for the program.
The 2014 vintage panel consists of wine writer Nick Stock, Kate McIntyre (Moorooduc Estate), Margot Muir (Edinburgh Cellars) and local wine makers Paul Carpenter (Hardys Tintara), Peter Fraser (Yangarra Estate) and Andrew Jericho (Maxwell Wines).
All wines are sourced from a ‘single site’ – a small plot of land with a unique flavour profile and personality. McLaren Vale Scarce Earth approved wines are identifiable through the exclusive neck label and are released to market on the 1st of May each year.
Now in its fifth year, the current in-market release is the 2013 vintage, comprising of 15 wines from 10 McLaren Vale producers, all from districts within the McLaren Vale region.
The 2014 release will be the sixth year of the Scarce Earth program.
